Reason 1: The Cast
Mainly driven by actors you have seen many times but never in leading roles. But, that is what makes the film as strong and powerful as it is. This cast had a chip on its shoulder to deliver the most believable experience possible. They succeed in leaps and bounds. You may recognize his face, but not know his name, but William Poulter (The Maze Runner, The Revenant) was AMAZING. His interpretation of this dark, sadistic, hard AF cop may be a career changer for him. He’s just one of the many actors who drive this film and make it such a strong and powerful movie.
Reason 2: The History
This event in history does not paint the prettiest picture for our country. In the final credits, the film explains how they recreated this story. The film clearly did as much research as it could, to make sure they painted the best portrait they could of the events that transpired that night. The way the story is told, it feels like you are watching someone who was walking you through that terrible night. It succeeds in bringing issues which affected African Americans during the 60’s are still relevant today. This film is not for those of the weak heart. This film is accurate to the best knowledge of those who contributed.
Reason 3: Relatable To Current Events
As I stated in the previous reason, this film is relatable to many of the current events going on in our country. The film doesn’t hold any punches about how they feel about the Justice system. If you want authenticity and what it felt like to be in a situation like that, this movie does it better than anything I have seen in awhile. It showcases both the bad/over the top cops and the cops who are there to protect and serve. Granted you’ll see more of one than the other but, you have to see it to know what I’m really talking about.
Reason 4: Extra Features
The extra features are fantastic. The cast of the film go in depth on how creating this film created a sense of bonding and brotherhood. Everyone wanted to make sure they made sure to create to most authentic portrayal of this story possible. Everyone had their reasons for creating something so powerful and how they fed off each others energy to make the best product possible. Learn how Kathryn Bigelow hand picked each actor for each role. I don’t know if that’s the nerd in me coming out, but hearing how a director knows who is best for their picture fascinates me and hopefully she enlightens people how the process is usually completed for their vision. Definitely check it out.
Reason 5: Kathryn Bigelow
An Oscar winning director for The Hurt Locker and another nominated for best picture in Zero Dark Thirty. Bigelow knows how to put together a story that captures your attention from the start. This film is no different. Detroit may not be her BEST movie, but damn it, this movie is for sure the most influential and powerful film she’s created. I keep saying it but it’s the truth. I have not experienced a more heart racing, deep, authentic movie in a long time. She pulls you in to this awful night and hits you HARD in the emotions and takes you on a journey you won’t soon forget.
