[With his recently released “For Real” music video still heating up the Internet, hip-hop artist DeLon speaks to SOHH about the message behind burning valuable things like money and Nike sneakers in this visuals.]

Me burning things in videos is really anti the system. There’s this system that dictates the nonsense we’re all involved in.

I burned those Nikes in the “Head High” music video because we as hip-hop artists are supposed to be so delved into the materialistic concepts of life that it’s become a part of what people think we are.

When I tell an old white guy that I’m a rapper, he assumes that I’m a thug, a womanizer, a drug user and for me, I’m tired of this. I’m tired of this bullsh*t.

I’m a Sri Lanka male in an immigrant family that never lived in the hood. I didn’t come from the hood. I came from a f*cking village.

But I am a hip-hop artist and I do spit rhymes that make me a rapper, an emcee, and to be constantly portrayed as this low-level being because I’m a rapper drives me f*cking crazy.

It drives me crazy because it’s not fair. It’s actually not fair to a bunch of rappers that aren’t like that like Lupe Fiasco, Common or Kendrick Lamar.

These are really, really smart individuals that write music that’s insightful. They’re poets.

When I burned those Nikes, it was like burning the concept that hip-hop had to be about tennis shoes. Hip-hop is not about tennis shoes.

It’s about expression.

If your lifestyle is of being a womanizer and doing drugs, who the f*ck cares? That’s your life, express it, that’s just not my life.

I have to express things my way. But for the outside community to believe we should all be lumped into one group, marginalized by some tags given to specific rappers, it drives me nuts.

It’s like saying when N.W.A. came out they were just a bunch of thugs. That’s bullsh*t. N.W.A. had a message and that message was important.

2Pac had a message and that message was important. If you don’t like the fact that we have messages, go f*ck yourself.
