For Banner, he said he was mostly impressed by Bieber’s appreciation for hip-hop.

And what happened, particularly when it came time for Bieber’s contribution, took the entire studio by surprise. “I’m very protective of hip-hop, and I would never produce a song if I didn’t think it was jamming,” Banner shared, “and Justin Bieber floored everybody in the studio.” For those questioning the credibility of Shawty Mane’s hustle and flow skills, Banner sets the record straight. “When I look at the blogs, people are trying to dust it like: ‘Did somebody write it? Was it Pro-Tooled together?’ That boy… I actually wanted the very first take. We ended up doing it again, but he spit the whole verse all the way down non-stop. He spit,” Banner clarified, explaining that the Biebs is a true student of hip-hop. “It made me feel good because it shows you the effect of [hip-hop] culture. And for him to study and dissect our culture that way… he really has a respect to spend that much time, because that takes practice to be able to spit and rap like that. And I was impressed.” (Neon Limelight)

In early summer, rapper Asher Roth talked about Bieber’s love for the rap game.

“Bieber is my guy, like, I think people really think I’m joking or I’m lying when I say we legitimately used to babysit him,” Roth revealed in an interview. “Not on some young kid stuff but we would look out for him and look after him. When I was in Atlanta, I had moved to Atlanta, Bieber moves down the street from me and he was like 12, 13 at the time. We used to just come over and hang out. We used to play Rock Band and chill. I have Bieber rapping on the [2008 Greenhouse Effect mixtape] ‘Cannon’ [song]. … You cannot not be happy for an over successful fun loving good kid. He’s a really, really awesome dude…He’s a hip-hop head, he really is — he loves it. I might have to ghostwrite for him but other than that, he’s a good dude. I’m really excited to see what he does in the future.” (XXL Mag)

G-Unit’s Lloyd Banks previously said he would hop on a track with Bieber.

“I would definitely do a record with Justin Bieber. I think early on in my career things were a little different. Now, the fact of the matter is the youth determine which way music is going to go,” explains Banks. “When you become influential enough to control one market, I think it’s time to cross-market.” (VIBE)

After Bieber released his “Speaking In Tungs” freestyle last fall under the rap alias “Shawty Mane,” Dipset affiliate Vado gave the singer his co-sign.

“I was shocked! He killed it! He sounded like [Notorious] B.I.G.,” Vado said in an interview. “When I seen it on Twitter, I didn’t believe it. We need to keep his verse for the remix! We might finish the remix this weekend, and let Justin go first. I’m definitely going to contact him.” (New York Daily News)
