Southern rapper/producer David Banner isn’t letting the critics get into his head. The hip-hop artist-turned-Hollywood actor is riding behind the new slavery-based The Birth of a Nation movie.

Banner went to Twitter last night (October 6) to show his support for the Nate Parker-starring flick.

Radio personality Charlamagne Tha God has also publicly endorsed the flick.

This week, Parker addressed the media coverage he’s received from an acquitted 1999 rape case.

In an excerpt from an interview airing Wednesday on The Steve Harvey Show, Parker, 36, says he has spent the past month “watching the ticker of headlines, salacious headlines, asking myself, ‘What are these journalists trying to do? Do they care about anyone involved? Do they care about what we’ve been talking about?’ I think it’s been a tragedy on so many levels.” (EW)

A Birth of a Nation silent protest went down last night at a California theater.

In front of the ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood Thursday night, a small group of protesters gathered for a silent candlelight sit-in at the first screenings of Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation. The protest was organized by the group F**k Rape Culture — made up of artists, filmmakers and women in Hollywood — and began at 7 p.m., when the historical drama is scheduled to first hit theaters in previews.
