[SOHH highlights a hot record every week and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the smash in Singled Out. After Torae broke down his Saul Williams-assisted “Imperial Sound” single, New York rapper Danny Matos decodes his personal “Let Go” banger.]

The song “Let Go” was actually the “Hangar” EP second single. I knew it was going to be something that was a head bopper as soon as I started writing it.

I think it’s important to because I never realized you could feel those kinds of songs until you write one. I have written a lot of stuff before and I believe you can feel when something is raw to you.

There’s a difference because sometimes you can write songs and don’t feel that connection to them. There’s some songs that I feel more connected to and this is one of them.

In my life, growing up, a lot of people feel in their element when they’re confident. Based on the things that I’ve dealt with in my youth and adolescence, I’ve always felt more in my element when I literally felt like vanishing, when I was away from everybody else.

I felt more myself when I was self sabotaging myself. It’s the opposite because a lot of people feel themselves when they’re out there and being positive and confident.

I was in such a dark place for such a long time that I felt like that was my identity. It’s very hard for me sometimes. I would be like, “How am I going to rap? How am I going to be a hip-hop artist if I can’t brag about myself at this point?”

It’s not bad that artists do that, it’s an important part of hip-hop, but with me being insecure, I don’t feel boastful right now. I don’t feel like there’s a lot of good things about me right now. A part of hip-hop is flexing. It’s being in your face and for me, it was like battling being half of that and half of this doubtful, insecure person which I think we all are.

It was me hovering over those two things.

It’s like letting you know I’m insecure and doubtful but wanting to be that hip-hop artist. It’s just hovering over those two extremes of being gritty and being confident. I have a hard time doing that.
