[With his new “The Hangar” EP finally available this month, hip-hop newcomer Danny Matos talks to SOHH about building a working relationship with producer Rusty Mack over a Craigslist posting.]

It’s crazy because I had tried a few engineers in the past and things did not work out. So I was really adamant about finding my own producer.

It was really important to me. Having a team is very important to me. I don’t think you can do anything by yourself. I feel like it was very important to build a relationship with somebody. I’m big on that.

You can sort of tell, when people have relationships, the quality of the music you hear.

It was never just me laying a track and leaving. I was always in there.

It was around this time last year and I was like, “Man, I need to find somebody.” I remember thinking, “I’m not going to put it on Craigslist. I’m not going to find anyone. That’s so stupid.”

But I put it on and I got a few responses from a few people. There was no connection. Then Rusty Mack hit me up when I was on my way to a show.

He was like, “You can come by and check stuff out.” I remember thinking, “Should I?” I had already met three people. I live in the Upper East Side and he was in Washington Heights, so I didn’t know.

The stigma is you’re not going to find sh*t online. Then I was like, “Let me go meet him.”

I remember meeting him and being intimidated at first because he really seemed like he knew what he was doing. He was official.

He played me beats and he told me people he had worked with and I was a little nervous.

But I developed working with him. I’m a totally different artist right now than a year ago when I first met him. Picture me a year ago speaking to this guy and I already had a high level of respect for him.

We stuck with it and just started making music.

The rest is history.
