Former Roc-A-Fella Records co-owner Damon “Dame” Dash recently talked about his past issues with protégé Kanye West and what sparked their breakup.
According to Dame, there were issues with Kanye prior to them breaking apart in the mid-2000’s.
“At the time, I had dropped Kanye to be honest. It was because of not agreeing with the way he was moving. That’s water under the bridge. Then I gave him the opportunity like, “As a man, I signed you, so I’m gonna give you the opportunity. I’m not gonna walk away while you’re signed to Roc-A-Fella. If you want me to keep running your s**t I will.” I had already argued with him. I had already got at him like the old Dame Dash. We had already established we weren’t moving.” (“Sway In The Morning”)

Dame also discussed Kanye’s current power moves in the business world.
“He chose to make the decision he felt was right for himself. That was it. For the last five, six years, it’s been nothing Kanye could do for me. I’m not playing the game he’s playing. I’m trying to figure out how to do things on my own. He’s out looking for experience. He’s trying to do things bigger than what he’s done. He’s fulfilling his dream, fearlessly. He’s putting up his own dough as he makes it. He’s staying active. For the last six years, I’ve been running around the world looking for people that are looking to do things like I do it.” (“Sway In The Morning”)
Kanye recently talked about what plans he and Dame had on deck.
“But at that time – I came to Roc-A-Fella because Jay Z was my idol. It would have been very hard for me at that young stage, where I was, to separate from my idol. That’s the decision I made – we’re going to work on films. I really like the films he’s doing. He had all types of ideas in there. Dame is like the original person who understood culture and [knew] where every situation would go. [Beanie Sigel] would have a problem, he’d go pick him up. … You definitely gotta say Dame is a real n*gga. When he came over to the crib and I just saw him, I missed him. I missed the good, I missed the bad. I missed all of that because all of that is what created College Dropout. That tension – we’re creating something new in the fashion world and the movie world.” (“The Breakfast Club”)
Dame hinted at significant business moves being made with Kanye on his Instagram page last month.
The thing we don't do historically and culturally is stick together but we are stopping that now if we stick together we don't need any middle men from others cultures… We know we can do it on our own…but we are so powerful together…pause and we have our own money..we already made history in music so we can do that for fun so we're gonna do movies… This is like when Spielberg and Geffen got together and did dreamworks…it's time…me and kanye making movies and my brother Qtip was there to bless the deal #independencewon #cutoutthemiddleman photo by @raquelmhorn @loisaidas @damondashstudios @dressedtokill_ddstudios @toohonorable_ddstudios @qtiptheabstract
