Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has ventured into the world of hip-hop in a new Papa John's Pizza advertisement which shows the 69 year-old sports executive busting raps.
The new advertisement invaded the blogosphere Monday (August 27) afternoon.
Say what you want about Jerry Jones — he’s a great team owner, he meddles too much in the Dallas Cowboys coaches’ business, he spent way too much on that palace of a stadium, he built one heck of an amazing stadium … whatever you want. Just don’t say he’s a good rapper. Please. I beg of you. Even if you’re joking. We don’t want to encourage more commercials like the Papa John’s spot above. The advertisement is a follow-up to what was apparently a successful Papa John’s bit featuring Jones, or at least his likeness, break dancing. But this hip-hop commercial is Jones all the way. After all, if they were going to fake it, you’d think they’d get someone with at least a little rhythm. (Los Angeles Times)
Immediately following its release, Jones has received playful backlash from the media.
1. It’s like the rapping grandma in The Wedding Singer, only with none of the cuteness and a ton more plastic surgery. 2. That clip of Jones and the pizza delivery man jumping off the stairs is the stuff of which legendary .gifs are made. 3. I wonder if the new Dez Bryant rules prohibit the Cowboys wide receiver from watching rap videos? For his sake, I hope so. 4. As for Cowboys fans in Dallas who are going to have to see this commercial repeatedly during the NFL season, I feel no such sympathy. They cheer for the Cowboys. They made their own beds. (USA Today)
According to reports, Jones owns a handful of Papa John’s in Texas.
Jones actually has a pretty decent stake in the company — he acquired six franchises in the Austin, Texas, area in 2005 under the “Star Papa” umbrella, and now, there’s this. According to the Austin Business Journal , Star Papa owned 78 such restaurants in Texas with those acquisitions, and had 75 in early 2011, when Jones hosted Super Bowl XLV at Cowboys Stadium. Jones has Papa John’s pizza all over that stadium, and he makes a cut of every slice you buy. (Yahoo Sports)
Brooklyn Nets basketball owner Mikhail Prokhorov recently revealed his aim to rap at minority team owner Jay-Z‘s upcoming Barclays Center concert series.
According to Mr. Prokhorov, a reprise is in the works, but this time in downtown Brooklyn, where Jay-Z will open the $1 billion Barclays Center with a series of sold-out concerts this fall. “Yes, I will rap at his concert,” Mr. Prokhorov informed Crain’s via email. “I am in rehearsals now 10 hours a day and plan to demand joint billing.” (Crains New York)
