I started off with just a Detroit song for “A History of Violence” and then I figured we should just make it a Michigan song.

I’ve been a fan of Boldy James. I thought, “He would go really good on this track.” Boldy is such a slow-tone type of guy and so I wasn’t sure how he would fit on the song but I knew I had to get him because he’s so good and crazy.

He came in, sat around and just vibed on the beat. He smoked and drank and then before he left, he was like, “Oh yeah, let me get in the studio and do my verse.” So we all walked back in and he did his verse in just one take and he killed it.

I was so much of a fan of Boldy and I knew I had to get him on the song. A lot of times things look good on paper and then when you hear them they don’t. So I wanted to just go with him and see what happened and it turned out great.

Shout-outs to Boldy James. That’s that guy! He’s so Detroit.
