UFC superstar Conor McGregor and retired boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. are really going to face off. The sports rivals are expected to clash this summer in Las Vegas.
According to reports, Floyd and Conor are aiming to fight August 26 after months of mounted anticipation.
Mayweather Promotions plans to request the date from the Nevada State Athletic Commission for the much-anticipated boxing match between Mayweather, the former longtime pound-for-pound king and heavy favorite who plans to exit a 23-month retirement for the bout, and UFC superstar Conor McGregor, a source with knowledge of the plan told ESPN on Monday. Earlier this month, boxing icon Mike Tyson weighed-in on the potential McGregor/Mayweather bout.
“No, I don’t believe it can ruin boxing at all. Only way it can ruin boxing is if McGregor goes and boxes Floyd because he’s going to look really ridiculous boxing him,” Tyson told Sirius XM channel 93 in a new interview being released on Monday. “But if he goes in there with the UFC stuff, now this could be pretty interesting. … [McGregor] doesn’t win in a boxing match.” (Fox Sports)
Recently, buzz developed about boxing veteran Manny Pacquiao wanting to face-off against McGregor if the Mayweather situation falls through.
If Floyd Mayweather doesn’t get off his butt and sign the paperwork to fight Conor McGregor, Manny Pacquiao WILL … so says Manny’s promoter, Bob Arum. “Be patient, don’t give in, [UFC president] Dana [White’s] a good negotiator and he’ll get the thing done. But he can’t be pushed around by Mayweather and his people. Pacquiao’s got a really tough fight against this guy in Australia, Jeff Horn and after that fight on July 1st here in the United States if McGregor is still looking for an opponent, Manny Pacquiao is there.” (TMZ)
