Common and Legend won their prestigious trophy at Sunday’s 2015 Golden Globe Awards for having the Best Original Song category.

The pair won for ‘Glory,’ the uplifting track from the inspirational, Civil Rights-centric movie. And as motivational as their song is, the duo’s acceptance speech was equally as emotional, as Common and Legend compared the leaders of the Civil Rights movement of the ’60s to those who are still fighting for equality in our country today — particularly in regards to the recent protests in light of Ferguson and the murder of Eric Garner. Common gave an emotional acceptance speech alongside Legend.

“The first day I stepped on the set of ‘Selma,’ I began to feel like this was bigger than a movie,” he said. “As I got to know the people of the Civil Rights movement, I realized I am the hopeful black woman who was denied her right to vote. I am the caring white supporter, killed on the front lines of freedom. I am the unarmed kid who maybe needed a hand, but instead was given a bullet. I am the two fallen police officers murdered in the line of duty. ‘Selma’ has awakened my humanity.” (“Golden Globe Awards”)

Legend gave props to movie director Ava DuVernay for recruiting him.

“He called me up and he said, ‘John, I want you to help me write a song for this film, and I’m so honored I was brought on at the last minute to be apart of this amazing film.'” (“Golden Globe Awards”)

The G.O.O.D. duo’s “Glory” faced stiff competition from notable music superstars.

“Glory” was up against “Big Eyes,” from “Big Eyes,” by Lana Del Ray, “Mercy Is,” from “Noah,” by Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye, “Opportunity,” from “Annie,” by Greg Kurstin, Sia Furler and Will Gluck, and “Yellow Flicker Beat,” from “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,” by Lorde. (MTV)
