In addition to the video, Common also explained why he never had a child with the mother of three.

“I just seen that yesterday,” Common told DJ Envy in an interview. “People kept asking me if I’d seen it and I was like, ‘Man, I seen it already.’ I think the video is clever, she looks beautiful in it, she’s sexy man. I like that she did that. She’s always revolutionizing stuff. I support it man, much respect to Erykah Badu. Hey, it was one of those situations [where we didn’t have kids together.] Sometimes things happen like that.” (Sucker Free)

Despite appearing fully nude, Badu recently said the decision was purely for artistic expression.

“I thought it was a move for women and men and children who feel they weren’t good enough. This is just me, I’m good enough.’ I felt it was important enough to do. More pros than cons. I know it was a shocking thing I did. I expected it to provoke dialogue, and it’s an important statement to make. It’s about freeing oneself of the layers and layers of things that we have learned as Americans in this country. At the point of becoming naked and individual and free, either you’re assassinated spiritually or mentally by the group or worse. The words coming out of my head after I was figuratively and literally assassinated was ‘groupthink.’ Groupthink is a term coined by Irving Janis, 1972. It pretty much states what happens when a character or person is ostracized for thinking out of what the consensus is. He or she is pretty much thinking [more] with a heart than with loyalty. It’s an important thing. It’s art. It’s performance art. Art is supposed to spark dialogue and ring an awakening of some sort.” (MTV)

The song is featured off Badu’s latest album which has remained on the sales charts since last month.

Soulful singer Erykah Badu’s New Amerykah Part Two dropped 12 slots to No. 41 with 10,800. After five weeks in stores, the singer’s new release has moved 184,400 records to date. (SOHH Sales Wrap)

Having dated him in the early 2000’s, Badu previously spoke about her relationship with Common.

“Just so much musical freedom. Common is the most humble person I ever met. Kind and generous. He reinforced that in me,” she said in 2008. “Andre [3000] is very creative and artistic. All of that that you see of him, that’s all him. That’s how he is, and that gave me a creative push, too.” (Concrete Loop)
