[SOHH highlights a hot record every week and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the smash in Singled Out. After Interscope Records’ K Camp decoded his “Lil Bit” music video, producer Clinton Sparks breaks down his “Reaper” visual.]

The reason why I [made “The Reaper” into a short film] is because one, I am a very visual person and creative person and when I put out my ICONoclast EP that “The Reaper” is off from, the first video I had come out was “Gold Rush” with me, Macklemore and 2 Chainz and I didn’t have control of that video and I hated it so I said, “From here on out, I’m going to write and direct and be hands on with all my videos.”

I recently did another one called, “Stay With You Tonight” with Riff Raff and then “The Reaper” featuring Problem and Snoop [Dogg] and the reason I made it a movie and a movie specific to sex trafficking awareness and sexual abuse is because the song on its own already tells a tale of my hardships of growing up in a tough neighborhood with no father. So that story already comes across on the audio so I wanted to use the platform of the video to tell another story that was also important for people to be aware of and understand how incredible important it is to try to put a stop to it and be aware of it and be aware of it enough to put a stop to it.

How the video came about is I was in [Las] Vegas doing a show and we drove by a motel and we were going to look for a place to do a photo shoot that day and I was like, “Man, this hotel looks sick! We should shoot my ‘Reaper’ video here.” And my photographer was like, “Yeah, that would be sick.” I was like, “Dude, what do you think the odds are we can get a camera crew and get this video done now, while we’re here?” He goes, “Bro, I don’t know. That’s crazy. How can you get a whole video done? You don’t even know anybody.”

So it took me two hours to find a camera guy – get the cars, the guns, the girls, the motel and write up the whole treatment. Two hours after I came up with the idea, everyone was on deck, we started shooting and straight thirty hours of filming, we had the video done.
