[With an extensive run in hip-hop as a producer/personality and growing comedian, funnyman Cipha Sounds tells us if it’s harder to break a rap newcomer or overnight stand-up comic.]
Nowadays, I find it a little harder with hip-hop and rappers because there’s so many ways you can come out. Back in the day, I knew all of the tricks.
You could do a freestyle for me and I would play it on the radio and we could put out a mixtape, bring you to some labels.
But nowadays, there’s SoundCloud, YouTube, everyone has their own blog. Everybody has their own social media numbers and podcasts.
It’s so splintered now that it’s so much harder to get exposure as an artist. Young artists have young fans and I’m not exactly hanging out with a bunch of young kids all the time.
Comedy is easier for me lately because I have the resources to get them exposure, get them on the right stages and it’s a lot quicker if they’re funny.
