[With his “No Small Talk” season 2 now on TIDAL, comedian Cipha Sounds talks to SOHH about the state of standup comedy in 2016.]

Comedy right now is bigger than it’s been in a long time. Everybody is hiring comedic writers to write certain things. Even political stuff, they have comedy writers on deck to write little jokes.

Stand-up is huge right now. There’s so many late night talk shows where you could get exposure. Internet shows. Comedy Central has a lot of shows and TruTV is doing a lot of shows.

So it’s huge right now.

But the only thing I don’t like is that it’s still a little segregated. I’m trying to create a world where it’s all types of people in one specific show. I call them ‘mixed shows.’

There’s a lot of mainstream rooms which is code word for ‘white comedy’ rooms and then there are a lot of urban rooms which is code word for ‘black comedy’ rooms. You would think you can’t mix the two.

Some of it doesn’t mix but it’s not black and white. Literally. There’s a lot of gray area that could mix but for some reason people just keep it so segregated.
