[With the attention TIDAL has received over the past few months courtesy of Beyoncé’s Lemonade and Kanye West’s T.L.O.P., comedian Cipha Sounds tells SOHH why the streaming platform’s winning in 2016.]
It’s very exciting. I’m not a rapper and I always wish I could go on stage and command a presence. When I deejay, I’m doing that to an extent but I’m playing other people’s songs.
So comedy was my way of getting to be that guy who goes on stage, grabs the mic and moves the crowd. Being down with TIDAL is like being down with Roc-A-Fella back in the day. It’s a great co-sign and everything Jay Z does in the beginning gets all this criticism. I’ve known Jay for a long time.
Everybody has something to say but it always works out. Roc Nation Sports, Rocawear, Roc-A-Fella Records. All of that stuff was like, “How is he going to do that? He should just sign a deal to Def Jam.” Then boom! He gets his own record deal, Roc-A-Fella becomes a hip-hop dynasty.
When Jay Z first came out with TIDAL and people were hating on it, I was like, “Guys, don’t you get the gist already? Every time you hate on something, it just gets better.”
I don’t know why people hate.

I was at that event when they announced TIDAL and all of the stars were there. I was like, “This is amazing.”
How can you hate on this? All you want to do is look at celebrities all day on Instagram and follow them around on different social media platforms. Why would you get upset that they’re all together doing a project together? That sounds amazing to me.
