[With his “No Small Talk” streaming exclusively on Jay Z’s TIDAL, comedian Cipha Sounds talks to SOHH about his knack for working and helping celebrities before they blew up.]
I’m half-joking about [putting on] Hannibal [Burress], he did do one of my shows and he’s one of the funniest guys in the world.
Hannibal is actually my bad luck charm because anytime he’s around, I bomb on stage. F*ck him first of all! Just kidding.
I didn’t discover Angela Yee, she was friends with [Eminem’s manager] Paul Rosenberg but I taught her the ropes of radio. Look at her now.
My bow Drewski, who now basically runs Hot 97, used to carry my crates and be my little intern and assistant. He runs Hot 97 now.
I brought Rihanna and Rick Ross to Jay Z back in the day. I didn’t teach Rick Ross how to rap but I definitely heard something early on. I’m good at finding things early on and blowing it up.
That’s one of my talents.
That’s what I do with my improv shows on Fridays, that’s what I do with my “No Small Talk” show with a bunch of comedians on there who have been doing this for awhile but they just need the exposure. I’m really good at placing those things.
