Chuck D Joins Spike Lee and Colin Kaepernick On Biopic, Signaling A Militant Bend

Chuck D announced on social media that he would be featured in a Spike Lee documentary about Colin Kaepernick airing on ESPN. The involvement of the Public Enemy frontman indicates the film will lean heavily into Colin’s militant and social justice side.

Chuck D posed with legendary film director Spike Lee in celebration of being included in the new documentary about Colin Kaepernick.The PE founder posted a photo on social media with the caption:

“Spike Lee ᴡɪʟʟ ᴅɪʀᴇᴄᴛ ᴀ ᴍᴜʟᴛɪᴘᴀʀᴛ ᴅᴏᴄᴜᴍᴇɴᴛᴀʀʏ ꜰᴏʀ ESPN ᴏɴ Colin Kaepernick, ᴛʜᴀɴᴋ ʏᴏᴜ ꜰᴏʀ ᴀʟʟᴏᴡɪɴɢ ᴍᴇ ᴛᴏ ʙᴇ ᴀ ᴘᴀʀᴛ ᴏꜰ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴊᴇᴄᴛ. ✊🏾” 

On the wall behind them is a mural of the classic film “Do The Right Thing”, which Spike Lee directed.  Chuck D performed the most memorable song from its soundtrack, “Fight The Power”.  Embedded between the two gentlemen is a quote from the militant rapper’s most famous verse, where he raps:

 “Elvis was a hero to most, but he never meant shit to me, you see, straight out racist—that sucker was simple and plain Motherfuck him and John Wayne!” 

According to an ESPN press release, there is no release date yet. However, Kaepernick is reportedly working very closely with Lee. The “Spike Lee Joint” will focus on Kaepernick’s adult life and his social justice protests. Chuck D’s involvement will most certainly give it a militant bend.

Meanwhile, the Spike Lee documentary is causing a lot of excitement and anticipation for many. Some are drawing comparisons to Ava Duvernay’s “Colin in Black and White”.
