In Gambino’s perspective, hip-hop has lost its essence and purpose.

“We never wanted to make a rap album. I’ve talked about this before,” Gambino explained in an interview. “Rap is done. Rap is done. I love hip-hop, I love rap, but the thing it was supposed to do it doesn’t do anymore. I love it as music. It’s the same thing as like jazz. It’s like jazz, when it was doing what it was supposed to do, and people still listen to music now but it’s not doing the social work it’s supposed to do anymore. … I would like to be a leader of the new movement going on now.” (Hot 97)

The buzzing hip-hop artist also discussed his parallels to rap star Drake’s career path.

“Drake doesn’t get asked, ‘Are you hard enough?’ or anything like that even though Drake’s life is really my life,” he added. “I really grew up in the ‘hood. I get it, I’m wearing a grandma sweater. But I am also a black male. I still have to wear this grandma sweater when I go see my grandma in the Bronx, who lives in a sh*tty neighborhood. Where my cousin just got shot and stabbed twice in the neck hustling there.” (Hot 97)

Following a recent performance, Gambino revealed his interest in doing a joint project with Chicago’s Chance The Rapper.

One of the hip hop collaborations of the year could be on the way after Childish Gambino hinted about an EP with Chance The Rapper. After performing together at The Governors Ball in New York, where Chance debuted a verse on their collaborative effort ‘The Worst Guys’, Childish, real name Donald Glover, took to Twitter to make the announcement. “now that chance finally released his verse on “worst guys”, maybe he can hurry up and finish the rest of our EP. #hinthint” (Mix Mag)

Last May, Gambino said he was already starting to take meetings with interested record labels.

“I talked to some majors,” Gambino told MTV News moments after performing at Power 106’s annual Powerhouse concert Saturday. “It’s really about sitting down, figuring out what they can offer.” Gambino didn’t divulge any names, but he did confirm that he’s been meeting with several big-time suitors. “A lot of power’s been shifted back to the consumer and the artist with the Internet,” he explained. “So I feel like we’re in a position to just talk and there’s still a lot of things that majors still understand a lot more.” (MTV)

  1. yeah rap is terrible nowadays, has been for a long time now. Its mostly used to promote ignorance and to discourage intelligence among black folks.

  2. Rap is about getting the party started and having fun to, stop trying to act like this shit is just about talking about social ills, it’s about all this shit, and radio and video shows should show that mix, and yes gangsta and thug shit is apart of it too yell

  3. Let’s not get this twisted, there are real Hip-Hop artists out there who are doing their thing and really representing the culture… Dilated Peoples just dropped a dope album, Halo ft Masta Killa “Mans Musa” album, Skyzoo & Torae etc, etc. Those who say hip-hop is dead, definitely doesn’t know what is going on with the culture and judge strictly on the mainstream/pop culture….. Step ya Game up and Support Real Hip-Hop!!!
