Amidst the violence and action that takes place in the video, masked viewers sitting on the balconies above are seen recording nearly everything with their phones. This is Glover’s way of raising awareness about the social media epidemic that occupies nearly every person in this country. The cell phones also help reinforce his racial message that racism is still alive, as he features lyrics such as “This a celly, that’s a tool” to serve as a haunting reminder of the tragic murder of Stephon Clark, a black man who was shot in 2015 after police mistook the cellphone he was holding for a gun.
