Less than 48 hours after the shocking fatal shooting of nine people in South Carolina, the shooting suspect’s roommate has stepped forward to speak out.

According to Dalton Tyler, suspect Dylann Roof wanted to spark chaos and war.

“He was big into segregation and other stuff,” Tyler told ABC News. “He said he wanted to start a civil war. He said he was going to do something like that and then kill himself.” He said Roof had been “on and off” with his parents, but they had previously bought him a gun. He hadn’t been allowed to take it with him until this week, Tyler said. (The Guardian)

A former classmate of Roof, John Mullins, also spoke out on Roof’s high school habits this week.

“He made a lot of racist jokes, but you don’t really take them seriously like that. You don’t really think of it like that.” (The Daily Beast)

President Barack Obama addressed the gruesome attack Thursday (June 18).

“I’ve had to make statements like these too many times,” he said. Yet again, he added, innocent people have been killed by someone “who wanted to inflict harm and had no problem attaining a gun.” “At some point we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this kind of mass violence doesn’t happen in other advance countries,” he said. Various celebrities took to their social media accounts to speak out.

Hours after the shooting, Dylann Roof’s name surfaced as a possible suspect.

Charleston police named the suspect as Dylann Roof of Lexington, South Carolina. The gunman is believed to have sat in on a bible study meeting for up to an hour on Wednesday evening before opening fire, killing six women and three men including the church pastor. Officials have called it a hate crime. (BBC News)
