Celebrity promoter Damon Feldman has stepped forward to speak out on the controversy he ignited last week over a publicized scheduled fight between rap star DMX and George Zimmerman.
According to Feldman, certain aspects of his personal life made him realize the fight should not go down.
Speaking to Rolling Stone after the cancellation, Feldman elaborated on his decision. “Zimmerman was the wrong person to have in this,” said Feldman. “I looked into the eyes of my son and daughter today and couldn’t imagine someone killing them and getting off scot-free. It just really hurt. It was a tough decision because I could have made two million dollars here, but at least I have my dignity. I’m happy. Thank you.” (Rolling Stone)
Feldman announced the fight’s unexpected cancellation Saturday (February 8).
“Its something that everyone who is mad and hating me are the people that DONT pay my bills , DONT help charities and don’t know me,” Feldman tweeted February 8.
“Have a great weekend I won’t be on Twitter for rest of weekend”
“I want to thank everyone for the good n bad comments I’ve made the choice to cancel the fight w George Zimmermann more to life then money” (Damon Feldman’s Twitter)
X’s representative Domenick Nati also released a statement to address the cancellation.
“Damon Feldman has announced that the George Zimmerman fight is cancelled via his Twitter. As previously stated, DMX never agreed to the fight and we thank you for all of the support from DMX’s fans. This situation will not affect any of DMX’s upcoming concerts in America or around the world.” (Statement)
Heading into the weekend, DMX revealed his confidence in dominating the controversial face-off.
“I was challenged,” X said in an interview. “I still haven’t really decided if I was going to do it but if I did do it, whatever money was supposed to go to him would have to go to charity. … I will glady beat the sh*t out of him. … When you fight with your heart, you’re always going to win.” (Fox Carolina News)
