New York rapper Cardi B is staying woke in these streets. The hip-hop diva has flexed her support for a wave of people occupying the MDC Brooklyn Detention Center this weekend as inmates have remained without heat for an entire week.

Cardi went to Instagram Saturday (February 2) to show her support for people protesting to get heat restored.

Over the past few hours, New York rapper Mysonne has kept fans updated on the occupancy.

According to reports, the federal Brooklyn jail has not had heat since last weekend due to a power outage.

The New York Times reports that several federal public defenders and leaders of the union representing the jail’s corrections officers told the publication of the jail’s current conditions. The Metropolitan Detention Center in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, houses more than 1,600 inmates. Sources told the times the inmates had been stuck in freezing cells for days now. “They just stay huddled up in the bed,” June Bencebi, case manager at the jail, told the Times. (The Hill)

On Friday, inmates made gestures and noises to alert people in the area of their situation.
