[SOHH highlights a hot record every week and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the smash in Singled Out. After Danny Matos broke down his chilled “F*ck My Head Up” anthem, California hip-hop artist DeLon breaks down the science behind his “For Real” music video.]

The “For Real” music video was tough because I produced the beat so long ago in comparison to when I wrote something on it. It was just supposed to be an experimental, electronic beat for when I deejay.

Every time I played it for somebody, they would say, “Man, you should write some lyrics to that song. That song is incredible.” I would be like, “Man, I don’t know the first thing about writing.” It’s so raw.

It’s a girl screaming in the background with the ‘Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.’ That’s actually a girl that I chopped up screaming. It’s like that being scared of something sound. I didn’t know what to do.

I went through a couple iterations and I didn’t like it. I was like, “Nah, I’m not going to ruin the song.” To a certain extent, I feel like I didn’t do this beat a hundred percent justice.

I had to hang it up and be like, “Okay, this is going to be what we release.”

Ultimately when I wrote the song, the one thing that came up in every version was the, ‘Ah, ah, ah, nah, nah, nah, nah nah nah nah,’ so I kept that and it ended up being in the final iteration of the song.

My boy Nate came in and actually helped me by co-writing the hook with me. That was comfortable because I needed to bring in another set of ears on the song in order for me to finish it.

It just wasn’t getting finished.

That’s what happened and that’s what took so long because sometimes when you make music as a producer, you never really think about what it’s going to turn into as a song.

It’s just an expression of yourself as a producer.
