Bun considered what it meant for his latest solo effort to be labeled a classic.

“For every album labeled a classic, there are dozens of others that people feel deserve the honor. So I realize that people now feel they have to place my album next to others that they feel were more impactful, and argue their case. With social networking being as prevalent as it is in our society, these arguments now take place in a very public arena, which in order to be heard, you often have to be very opinionated and abrasive to stand out. So people, while having no personal hate or malice towards me, will make very loud arguments about The Source‘s decision, and the loudest ones will probably get the most attention…Having said all this, it is with great honor and admiration that I humbly accept this esteemed declaration from the Source Magazine and it’s staff for my album Trill OG, and for those that feel they need to sh*t on me to argue for another artist or album, don’t worry. The Trill OG can take it! UGK for life!” (Rap Radar)

The 5-mic achievement marks The Source‘s highest rating since Lil Kim‘s The Naked Truth in 2005.

Each album went through meticulous review from The Source’s ‘Mind Squad’ across different categories that included originality, lyrical content, arrangement and production. Trill O.G. scored high enough to receive 5 mics, the holy grail of Hip-Hop ratings, granting it admission into an elite club of timeless musical compositions that span over 20 years. The album rating system has been a staple for the magazine in announcing which artists have put together the best album from start to finish. Bun B is the first artist to receive this honor in over 5 years. The state of Hip-Hop music returns strong with these releases and The Source celebrates the return of Hip-Hop dominance. These artists have pushed the envelope, crafted chart topping music and are helping restore Hip-Hop’s dominance, with Bun B the leading the pack.Trill O.G.’s [5 mics] rating is something only a select few have received in the 22-year history of The Source. Based on one-day estimates, Bun’s new album will debut on the sales charts next week.

Rap-a-Lot/Fontana’s Bun B, the surviving member of the group UGK after the death of partner Pimp C, releases his solo album,Trill OG, which features contributions from his ex-bandmate as well as Young Jeezy, Yo Gotti and Gucci Mane, along with producers J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Drumma Boy and Boi-1da. The disc looks on target for between 30-35k in sales. (HITS Daily Double)

Bun recently talked about putting together his latest Trill installment.

Trill was definitely a rough album but a fun album to put together,” he continued. “II Trill was a little bit different circumstances, dealing with the [death of Pimp C]. I’m not really sure that I gave that album everything I could. I don’t think I had everything to give to that album at the time. It was still a great album; we made great music. I mean, we could do that in our sleep. But I’m not trying to do it in my sleep. I’m trying to be eyes wide open, fully focused. And I think we came back and accomplished that on Trill OG.” (MTV)
