Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has announced Cyntoia Brown will finally see her life sentence fade to black after granting clemency to her in a 2006 first-degree murder conviction.

According to reports, Governor Haslam is commuting Brown’s life sentence to supervised parole.

“This decision comes after careful consideration of what is a tragic and complex case,” Haslam said. “Cyntoia Brown committed, by her own admission, a horrific crime at the age of 16. Yet, imposing a life sentence on a juvenile that would require her to serve at least 51 years before even being eligible for parole consideration is too harsh, especially in light of the extraordinary steps Ms. Brown has taken to rebuild her life. Transformation should be accompanied by hope. So, I am commuting Ms. Brown’s sentence, subject to certain conditions.” (WATE News)

Cyntoia is expected to be released from prison August 7.

Brown will be released from prison on August 7, 2019, and will remain on supervised parole for 10 years. Her parole conditions will require that she not violate any state or federal laws and she must meet certain other conditions including employment, education, counseling and community engagement. Celebrity support from entertainers like Rihanna and Kim Kardashian helped ignite a viral campaign to get Brown out of prison.

Brown was arrested in 2004 after she thought Allen was reaching for a gun when he tried to solicit her for sex. Prosecutors argued she wanted to rob him and was not defending herself. After being tried as an adult, Brown was convicted of first-degree murder in 2006. Due in part to outrage on social media and attention from celebrities including Rihanna and Kim Kardashian, Brown’s story went viral. Her case went all the way to the Tennessee Supreme Court, which ruled last month that she couldn’t become eligible for parole until she served at least 50 years in prison. (Newsone)

Once the news went public, various hip-hop artists reacted on social media.
