Comedian Donnell “Ashy Larry” Rawlings of “Chappelle’s Show” fame was arrested in New York City this morning (April 1) after allegedly brandishing a gun and holding up traffic at a busy intersection, shirtless and barefoot.
Police have taken the comedian into custody as a result of the incident which was captured on a bystander’s camera phone. [See video below]
When police arrived on the scene they found a shirtless Rawlings wielding a .40-caliber pistol in the Times Square area of Manhattan. He was arrested for criminal possession of a weapon and refusing to take the sobriety test. At the time of posting, Rawlings was awaiting arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court.
A representative for Rawlings told SOHH that the comedian, who had been missing in recent weeks, has been under a tremendous amount of strain since “Chappelle’s Show” ended in 2005.
“We’d been looking for him for two weeks now,” the source explained. “And we’re trying to find him help. But, you know, it’s, it’s hard. He’s not easy to wrangle. I think it’s like the ‘Chappelle’s Show’ curse or something. There’s more to it than what you see on that videotape, that’s for sure.” (SOHH)
“Chappelle’s Show” ended abruptly when its star, Dave Chappelle began behaving erratically.
Comedy Central today announced production on the third season of Dave Chappelle’s show has been suspended until further notice. No official reason has been given to the shut down, but in an E! News online report there is speculation that Dave Chappelle has been missing from the set for weeks. This follows a December announcement by Comedy Central that Dave and his writers got to a late start on writing the third season, pushing off production to January 2005. (InternetDJ)
Donnell later landed a job as a New York City morning show radio host but was eventually fired.
Donnell Rawlings has been dismissed from his morning show post at Power 105.1’s “Ed Lover Show with Egypt and Ashy.” A spokesperson for Donnell “Ashy Larry” Rawlings has confirmed he will no longer co-host the station’s morning show. “I am not able to comment at this moment,” Rawlings told SOHH, in regards to his dismissal. He was also the victim of a racially motivated comedy club shooting in 2007.
Ashy was targeted outside a Jersey City, New Jersey nightclub where he just performed. He was leaving Club Jordan’s with his girlfriend, when a white man in a SUV brandished a gun at him and began screaming racist remarks. The man fired three gunshots in the air before police subdued him, wrestling him to the ground and then arresting him. (HipHopCrunch)
