OutKast’s Big Boi has revealed how he missed out on an opportunity to perform at a Super Bowl halftime show this week.

According to Boi, his OutKast sidekick Andre 3000‘s need to perform their full songs on the Super Bowl stage a decade ago cost them a national performance.

“We were supposed to perform at the Super Bowl. We had two songs, ‘The Way You Move’ and ‘Hey Ya!’ and we didn’t, Dre didn’t want to split the songs up. He didn’t want to cut the songs. He wanted to perform them so they were like, ‘Y’all can’t do it.’ He wanted to perform both songs in full and they didn’t give us enough time to do it so we passed. [How much was I in his ear to do it?] A lot. To this day, his son is like, ‘Dad, you should have performed at the Super Bowl.’ [laughs] We look at it now and laugh but hopefully they’ll invite us back. He’s like my brother. We grew up together. I slept on his bedroom floor when we were in high school when I moved to Atlanta. It’s bigger than music with us.” (“The Dan Le Batard”)

A few months ago, Big Boi hinted at a possible OutKast biopic coming together.

Three Stacks previously denied buzz about a new OutKast album coming together.

“There are no plans to do [an Outkast album]. It’s not like some people think: ‘They’re about to drop this album!’ We don’t have, like, one song. There’s no trickery or nothing like that,” Andre explained in an interview. “It’s kind of like growing up in a house with your brother, people expecting y’all to live in the same room and have bunk beds forever. And people try to read into it and say people are beefing. But it’s nothing like that, man. Big Boi will always be my brother and a really important part of my life.” (Billboard)

Last year, Andre talked about what an OutKast biopic would look like.

Rapper Andre Benjamin worked obsessively on his startling portrayal of Jimi Hendrix in the new film Jimi: All Is By My Side, and he already has ideas about a potential biopic for his group Outkast. “It would be great to make an Outkast movie right now, but instead of really serious, make it a full comedy — like Kevin Hart would play Big Boi,” he said of his rapping partner last night. And as himself? “We should cast somebody stupid — like Leonardo [DiCaprio].” (Rolling Stone)

    • you don’t know that. the label was probably apprehensive that their records could still sell….we live in different times now.

      • Good music, good marketing and promotions. Outkast had a diverse following. On top of all that no one buys CD’s no more everyone downloads music so the production and distribution cost are lower. The record companies is not the issue. Trust me.
