[After recently putting out his #TrapLivesMatter album, St. Louis native Big Will talks to SOHH about his past BET “106 & Park” freestyle days and how his championship run ultimately landed him in A-Town.]
To be honest, after “106 & Park,” things kind of fell apart for me. I was staying with somebody but the deals kind of didn’t go in my favor.
One day I went out to a battle that was held by AllHipHop.com and I ended up losing. I told myself I wasn’t going back to St. Louis without anything. So I ended up staying in New Jersey because it was the closest place for me to get to New York.
I would go to New York every day or every other day and pass out demos. Long story short, I was in a studio one day and this A&R from Purple Ribbon at the time heard what I did, liked it and moved me to Atlanta. I’ve been here for the last 10 years but musically, I’ve just been trying to kind of recreate myself.
As well, I just wanted to see and really figure out where I really fit in in the music scene. If you think about 2007 and 2008, it was the snap era and it was just music I loved to listen to at home or in the club but not what I wanted to make.
I make more of a soulful, blues, like a St. Louis blues type of music. So me getting on a record making a snap record wasn’t really true to me.
I wanted to see where I fit in the game and what I could offer to the culture.
I just felt like now is a really great time.
