New York hip-hop artist Azealia Banks received a rude awakening heading into the weekend after trying to put pop star Lady Gaga on blast over a recent fashion statement she made at the Video Music Awards.

Banks hopped onto her Twitter page and seemingly wanted credit for inspiring Gaga’s VMAs mermaid outfit.

“Of COURSE gaga wants to play mermaid again….. Pffft.,” Azealia tweeted August 28.

“Not picking a fight. Just all looks soo familiar…. To me.”

“It’s just …. Late.” (Azealia Banks’ Twitter)

Gaga appeared to respond with a few mermaid-related tweets including an animation of Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

It didn’t take long for Gaga to fire back with a few subtweets of her own, though. Not only did she tweet out a .gif of teary-eyed Ariel from The Little Mermaid, Gaga also shared a link to an image of a mermaid painting by Sandro Botticelli with the hashtag “#SomeOfUsJustLikeToRead.” Me-ow. While not direct, Azealia seemed to downplay the response and Twitter backlash.

“So funny how many times my career was supposed to “over” because of things I say…,” Banks tweeted August 30.

“Lol people get so mad at me because the things i say are almost always accurate … #OOP” (Azealia Banks’ Twitter)

Along with her ode to the fantasy ocean creatures, Banks has applied mermaid themes into her music like last year’s Mermaid Ball mixtape.

Azealia Banks has released a new mixtape online. The singer put out her latest compilation online ahead of her Mermaid Ball at London’s Sea Life Center tomorrow, October 13.The 19-track collection includes her own track ‘Neptune’ as well as songs by Redlight, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Stardust. The event follows her first Ball in LA in June this year, which included performances by Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira and Yadi. Banks was recently forced to delay the release of her new single ‘Esta Noche’ after a row with its producer Munchi. (Digital Spy)
