Former Murder Inc. Records songstress Ashanti has stepped up to speak out on her real relationship with former boss Irv Gotti in light of their publicized break-up a few years ago.
Although Ashanti said there is no feud or real dispute between them, she is upset about Irv’s portrayal of her during their Murder Inc. run.
“Me and Irv, we are, um, there’s no beef,” Ashanti promised in an interview referring to Irv Gotti. “There’s definitely no beef but, for me, again, just me talking about my movement and being brave and brave heart and kind of just revealing a little bit more of myself at this point in my career, I feel like Irv kinda paints a picture of ‘what happened’ with me and Murder Inc., very one-sided. I hear him talk a lot about, ‘She’s disloyal,’ and ‘Oh, she didn’t throw up the M’s and she didn’t do this and that.’ And I feel it’s time to kinda set the record straight on what it really is.” (“The Hot 97 Morning Show”)
The New York native also talked about how hard she rode for their label through its dark days.
“I’m a Libra, I’m a very loyal person,” Ashanti added. “Anybody with any sense of logic could see that I rode out. I rode until the wheels fell off. [laughs] You know what I mean? I went to the trial, I was there, I was filming in Vancouver and in my contract, I wasn’t ever supposed to leave Canada. I came to the court, to the trial, three or four times when I was not supposed to. I was contractually doing what I was supposed to not be doing, paying those round trip tickets to come and support and it’s crazy because me and Irv weren’t even speaking. Like, we weren’t even speaking at all.” (“The Hot 97 Morning Show”)
Gotti recently admitted they still have a distanced relationship with one another.
“Ashanti is Written Entertainment,” Gotti said referring to Ashanti’s new label when asked about their relationship. “We’re good. We talk, we talk when we come around but honestly, I wish it was better. You know what I’m saying? I wish we was better. … I have nothing against being around her or letting everyone know that we’re cool, you understand? I don’t know if she feels the same way or whatever like that. It’s all good. … The bottom line with Ashanti is I love Ashanti. When you love somebody and they do things that you may agree with, you react differently and think but it’s only because I love that girl. We did something. We were in the Guinness Book of World Records. I don’t know if she wants [to team back up]. … She don’t want that. We over here throwing them M’s up ’til we die. You know what I’m saying? I don’t know if she wants to do that.” (“The Angie Martinez Show”)
Last year, Ashanti reportedly reunited with Irv for a “No One Greater” collaboration.
Just like old times, Ashanti is the R&B centerpiece alongside rap’s hottest names. For the latest single from her forthcoming album BraveHeart – her first in five years – the decorated songstress is paired with Bad Boy’s and Maybach Music’s tough guys, French Montana and Meek Mill, for “No One Greater”. This bass-knocking, synth-heavy number is produced by ‘Shanti’s former Murder Inc. boss, Irv Gotti, who is now apparently on good terms with the singer following their long-standing dispute. BraveHeart will be released sometime in 2013 – much later than the original August 28th date – via Ashanti’s own Written Entertainment imprint. (Soul Culture UK)
