[With the holiday shopping woes just weeks away, SOHH had the chance to test out tech giant Anki’s new OVERDRIVE: Fast & Furious Edition robotic battle-racing track. Peep below for five key things you gotta know before buying a few for family, friends and co-workers!]
1. A Long-Awaited Follow-Up
The first thing you gotta know about Anki’s new secret weapon – literally – is this is the long-awaited toy follow-up to its initial 2014 Anki Drive which then delivered the 2015 rollout of OVERDRIVE. As the saying goes – you can’t rush greatness, or maybe it’s don’t rush greatness, either way, two years later and Anki has delivered its most impressive premium release with OVERDRIVE: Fast & Furious Edition. The intensity has increased, the cars are more advanced and the possibilities are endless. This new release is the world’s most intelligent battle-racing system. Each Supercar is a self-aware robot, driven by powerful A.I. and equipped with deadly strategy. Whether players battle A.I. opponents or friends, their tactical options are unlimited. And with continuous software updates, the gameplay always stays fresh. Customize weapons. Swap out cars. Build new tracks. It’s easy to pick up, and nearly impossible to put down.Vrooooooooom.
2. Kid & Co-Worker Proof
One of the biggest things everyone has to worry about after coughing up a few big bucks for their fancy gadgets is having their kid, little brother/sister or even a co-worker coming around and messing it up. Whether it’s the LCD glass on your device getting pushed (or stepped on) too hard or maybe that unfortunate spill? OVERDRIVE: Fast & Furious Edition has you secured. The tracks are magnetic so whether someone steps on it or it gets trampled on, you don’t have to worry – at all. They easily snap into place and with each mat being so lightweight, you can literally pick up your entire racetrack and move it to a ‘safer’ area.
3. Lives Up To The Name
Don’t you hate when you buy something just for the name and you feel like you were baited and switched? Fortunately, OVERDRIVE: Fast & Furious Edition knows your pain and makes every last effort to assure you the same situation will ‘not’ happen with this rollout. From the trailer (above) to the in-game app, characters and even the on-track vehicles, you’re getting the full-blown experience of a Fast & Furious movie. Need a little Vin Diesel in your life? Rest assured – Dom, Hobbs, Letty and Tej are here for you. Just pick your car and driver and the world is yours.
4. It’s 2017, Y’All
It’s 2017 and while back in the day of your aunts, uncles, moms, dads and pretty much anyone over the age of 30 when you controlled racetrack cars with a figgity remote control, that’s not the case here. Team iPhone and Team Android finally unite as Anki OVERDRIVE: Fast & Furious Edition pushes players to download a separate, free-to-download app for iOS, Android or Fire OS, and compatible devices. In other words, that little gadget you’re used to spending 18-20 hours of your life with is now your true secret weapon in the race track – or battlefield – you’ve always wanted to live out in those Fast & Furious movies.
5. Pick Your Car
With the out of the box option, you have to make a pretty tough decision – go with Hobbs’ International MXT which is just the most insane battle track race car you’ll ever come across or go with Dom’s Ice Charger which is just as iconic as you’d imagine. Need a breakdown of each?
*International MXT – Hobbs’ iconic truck drives like its owner: Tough and steady. It rolls over obstacles, protected by its plated armor. The MXT’s weapons are blunt and direct, causing massive destruction. Its primary weapon, the rocket launcher, fires a deadly missile with a huge area of effect that wipes out everything in its path.
*Ice Charger – Dominic Toretto built his car for one purpose: Speed. He has no problem playing fast and loose, so long as he wins. Dom’s Ice Charger uses a Grappling Hook to gain advantage. Fire it into cars to pull yourself closer and slow down opponents.
In other words, there’s really no edge based on vehicle, it’s all about how you handle those driving skills when you load up the app!
Anki OVERDRIVE: Fast & Furious Edition has hit major retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Toys“R”Us and Anki.com for $169.99.
