2nd Time's A Charm

Andy Mineo and Lecrae's banned Been About It video is probably one of the BEST Hip-Hop videos we’ve ever seen... periodt. We'd even argue that it is a serious contender for Rap Video of The Year (sorry Lil Nas X).

We previewed the video, which features spectacularly impeccable remakes of over 20 iconic rap album covers. On the same day the song and video were to drop, the video was banned for copyright “clearances”, though it’s arguable that the two are well within fair use license and presented a creative re-presentation of the art.

Lecrae,  a native of Houston, and Andy Mineo from NY, re-imagine themselves on the covers of iconic hip-hop albums while paying homage to the love of vinyl. The video is a fun and riveting watch — take your eyes away for a second and you’ll miss one of the covers as they flash by.

Our “Been About It” Top 5 cover remakes were: The Chronic, DMX, 50 Cent and Outkast, The College Drop (Kanye West). Check out these precise album cover remake screenshots below.

And this ain’t no ‘we playin dress up’ running around with a video camera. The video, directed by Nathan Corrona for Dustbrand Films, did a masterful job of recreating the mood, lighting and intricate details of over 20 classic album cover artworks.

Checkout Lecrae with the “Gumby” haircut, the daisy age flowers and the reflection in Posdnous’ eyeglasses in the cover portrait re-iteration for De La Soul’s masterpiece, 3 Feet High & Rising.

And look at the gold etching encircling the Kanye sad bear on this College Dropout cover remake.  That could literally be Kanye in that sad bear suit, but it’s not — it’s Andy Mineo.

Lecrae and Andy come through with artistry and boldness — something lacking in hip-hop today. It’s a shame the clearance issues mean the original artistic offering for “Been About It” will not be seen at this time.

Unstoppable, the duo took their banned video to the streets to get reactions from the fans. Check out the reaction video below. If you’d like to see the original video, give us your email address — we’ll hit you with it when it is finally released.
