[With a few hit records like last summer's "Candy Rain" remix to his name, 18-year-old music newcomer Anthony Lewis talks to SOHH readers about his well-received To Be Honest mixtape, new music and new look heading into 2015.]
The motivation was [for To Be Honest] really about being honest. The records that were chosen were really speaking to me.
I’m like a regular person. I love to be around people and I just love having that girl you can really talk to. The mixtape is really just talking about that. It’s a girl, whoever it is, it’s about being honest because when I have a girlfriend, I’ve very honest.
I say on my songs not to put makeup on. There used to be a girl I’d date and she’d say, “I need to put on my makeup,” and I’d tell her, “I don’t care about the makeup.”
The whole mixtape is really based off of “my girl” and “I ain’t ever letting you go” type [of vibes].
I have to say Chris Brown is a huge motivation. I’ve listened to him my whole life. I remember early on being asked if I wanted to sing and I was like, “Nah, I just want to play ball,” and then out of nowhere I started singing in church.
Then from singing in church, I started singing in middle school talent shows and I told my sister, “I really want to do this.” She told me to start doing webcams and that’s what I started doing.
But Chris Brown is definitely one of my idols. That’s who I grew up on.
In 2015, I want to give y’all great music. I feel like it’s going to be my year. I have an album coming and so many great things.
I don’t want to let too much information out but I want everyone to get excited about what’s coming.
