Nearly a year after the death of New York resident Eric Garner at the hands of law enforcement, reports claim his family has agreed to a near $6 million settlement.

According to reports, the Garner family will receive $5.9 million from New York.

New York City officials Monday announced a $5.9 million settlement with the family of Eric Garner, the Staten Island man whose death while being restrained during an NYPD arrest set off waves of national protest over police brutality in the treatment of unarmed black men. City Comptroller Scott Stringer announced last evening that his office reached the agreement between the 43-year-old man’s family and the NYPD after it filed a notice of claim over Garner’s death nearly a year ago. Earlier this year, rap star Big Sean admitted how upset he became after finding out the officer who performed the chokehold would not receive jail time.

“It don’t even surprise me,” he says. “It’s sad. It is a racial thing, but the fact that the law can get away with this is sad. That you can kill somebody on camera. It’s been happening. It’s so wrong, on an ethics level, on a racial level, on so many levels. It brought my spirits down yesterday when I heard about Eric Garner. I didn’t even tweet about it. I didn’t do anything. I couldn’t.” (Complex)

Music veteran Nas recently referenced the chokehold that took Garner’s life last year.

‘Unfortunately, I’m not surprised cops are still murdering people. But I am surprised that the law enforcement did not do the correct thing with illegal chokeholds. A chokehold because of a man stating his piece—telling them he didn’t do anything. An illegal chokehold! It’s embarrassing to New York, and it’s embarrassing to the country.” (GQ Magazine)

G.O.O.D. Music rapper Pusha T recently revealed he pushed back an Adidas sneakers launch in light of a not guilty Michael Brown verdict being announced in November.

“When the [Mike Brown] verdict came out, we were supposed to start the rollout for the shoe and I was like no, we just can’t start today,” Pusha T said. “Artists definitely should be speaking out about it.” (Forbes)

  2. no where near enough…cant say he would have made that in his life but …we also cant put a value on his worth to his family nor can we put a dollar amount on the potential he may have been able to support via grandchild or child which he had….. its even more disturbing when you look at how easy it for the wronged to accept money and move on
