According to reports, Martin’s parents Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin visited the White House Thursday (February 26) to meet President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

“Today, on the third anniversary of Trayvon Martin’s death, showing all of our kids, all of them, every single day, that their lives matter, that’s part of our task,” President Obama said. “Where we are today didn’t come easy. It came through thick and thin.” (TIME)

According to reports, the federal civil rights investigation into the shocking 2012 death came to an end Tuesday (February 24) with no charges being filed against shooter George Zimmerman.

“The death of Trayvon Martin was a devastating tragedy. It shook an entire community, drew the attention of millions across the nation, and sparked a painful but necessary dialogue throughout the country,” said Attorney General Eric Holder in a statement. “Though a comprehensive investigation found that the high standard for a federal hate crime prosecution cannot be met under the circumstances here, this young man’s premature death necessitates that we continue the dialogue and be unafraid of confronting the issues and tensions his passing brought to the surface. We, as a nation, must take concrete steps to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future.” (MSNBC)

The Justice Department also issued a statement on reaching its conclusion.

In its statement, the Justice Department took pains to stress that it had pursued a vigorous investigation. It said investigators conducted 75 witness interviews, examined police reports, and looked at other encounters between Zimmerman and law enforcement since he was acquitted. They also enlisted an “independent biomechanical expert” to examine Zimmerman’s account of his confrontation with Martin. (MSNBC)

Zimmerman first caught his big break in Martin’s death two years ago.

Zimmerman has said he acted in self-defense when he shot the 17-year-old Martin during a confrontation inside a gated community in Sanford, Florida, just outside Orlando. Martin, who was black, was unarmed when he was killed. Once Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder by a state jury in July 2013, Martin’s family turned to the federal investigation in hopes that he would be held accountable for the shooting.
