Lotus’ unexpected treat stems from an “Eyes Above” collaboration.

For his new album You’re Dead!, the L.A. beat warper Flying Lotus roped in Kendrick Lamar to rap on the dazzling single “Never Catch Me.” But that wasn’t the only track that the two recorded. Lamar also recorded a verse for “Eyes Above,” a track that FlyLo recorded with FKA twigs and Niki Randa. (Stereo Gum)

Lotus recently explained why he couldn’t get the verse out to fans.

“There’s actually another track that he did on this album that I had to take off for political reasons, but it was a really cool thing. “He came to the house and laid it down and killed it. He didn’t come with no entourage or nothing. It was real special to me.” (Pitchfork)

Last month, the duo’s “Never Catch Me” music video premiered online.

The dark visuals start off at a funeral for a young boy and girl, but the sadness soon fades. Their souls rise out of their coffins and start to dance in front of the mourners before playing games in the backyard. With a smile on their faces, they drive off in a hearse as children chase them down the street. The song will appear on Flying Lotus’ album You’re Dead! (due Oct. 7) featuring Snoop Dogg, Thundercat, and Kendrick. (Rap-Up)

Flying Lotus recently discussed how the Kendrick collaboration came together.

“It just came about sort of naturally. He came through the crib and recorded it and it was great. The funny part is, though, that he wanted to keep that shit for his album. When I first sent him the track, he was trying to convince me to give it to him. Like, ‘Nah, man, I need that!'” (Rolling Stone)
