With buzz building about a new fragrance inspired by late musician Aaliyah, its maker has stepped up to explain its creation.

According to Xyrena CEO Killian Wells, the new Aaliyah By Xyrena fragrance is to pay homage to what she embodied.

“From day one we worked with Aaliyah’s estate to ensure that every aspect of this release met their approval,” Wells explained in a statement to MTV News. “They appreciated that we wanted to create a fragrance that was really about Aaliyah, not just a generic scent with her name on the bottle.” (MTV)

Aaliyah’s longtime friend Missy Elliott is fully behind the fragrance.

According to the Xyrena website, Aaliyah’s fragrance will come out in mid-October.

Aaliyah™ by Xyrena is the first and only official fragrance tribute to the Princess of R&B. Developed in close collaboration with Diane & Rashad Haughton (the late singer and actress’s mother and brother), Xyrena crafted a true aromatic tribute inspired by actual fragrances Aaliyah wore. (Xyrena)

The fragrance, which will sell for $64.00, is unisex.

Aaliyah by Xyrena is unisex but leans masculine, as Aaliyah favored traditional men’s scents in line with her signature, sexy tomboy image. The formula is also a hue of black which was Aaliyah’s favorite color. Aaliyah by Xyrena has base notes of vanilla, sandalwood, amber, and jasmine; middle notes of black pepper, violet and leather; with top notes of mint, lavender and mandarin. (Xyrena)
