Just over a year after Waka Flocka Flame lost close friend Mario "Slim Dunkin" Hamilton to a fatal in-studio dispute, the trial for shooter Young Vito reportedly starts today (February 19).

According to reports, Vito’s fate in the December 2011 slaying will soon be learned.

Opening statements are expected to begin Tuesday in Fulton County Superior Court in the murder trial of 29-year-old Vinson Hardimon. Hardimon, known as rapper Young Vito, has been indicted on charges of murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He’s accused of killing 24-year-old Mario Hamilton, known as rapper Slim Dunkin at an Atlanta recording studio on Dec. 16, 2011. Authorities say Hardimon was waiting for his turn in the recording booth before punching Hamilton. The fight ended with Hamilton shot in the chest. Hardimon later turned himself in to authorities. Last May, Waka Flocka descrbied his disbelief in believing longtime friend Dunkin died.

“My dog ain’t pass. I ain’t accepting that,” Waka told MTV News after a photo shoot in Brooklyn, New York, last week. “You know that sh– is gonna carry with me, though, because he’s me and I’m him. Together we’re Brick Squad, man.” Flocka dedicated his upcoming June album Triple F Life: Friends, Fans and Family to Dunkin. “What’s behind my Triple F Life wave? The passing of my best friend Dunk. R.I.P. Dunk,” he said. “That boy there was special. That boy there was different.” (MTV)

He also previously cited SD for inspiring last year’s Triple F Life solo album release.

“What made me put my album out? My best friend [Slim Dunkin] died in December,” Flocka said in an interview. “It took me two months after him passing away – not even two months. I didn’t get over his death for four months. So it took me the fifth month after my friend lost his life for me to start my new album.” (East Village Radio)

Fellow Brick Squad Monopoly rapper Frenchie previously talked to SOHH about losing their group member.

“I’ve always been able to move forward because I feel like the more you think about it, the more you suffer,” Frenchie told SOHH referring to Slim. “God works in his own purposes. That’s my brother right there. If I keep on stressing myself, I’m not gonna be able to do what my brother wanted us to do. We all go hard. We push ourselves within our Brick Squad family and follow suit. That’s what it’s all about. … [Slim’s passing] pulled us together. That’s family and so of course it hit the home base. We’ve got to keep working for my boy’s legacy and never let him die. We can never let his spirit die. He’s no longer here, but he’s here in the spirit. The longer we keep it in the air, the longer people are going to know who he is.” (SOHH)
