G-Unit leader 50 Cent is not worried about satisfying his core fan base with a new Street King Immortal album and has explained why he won’t rush out the long-awaited follow-up to 2009’s Before I Self Destruct.
Even though this LP will serve as his final contractual obligation to Interscope Records, Fif said he wants to make sure the quality meets his standards.
“I don’t really need the money off of the record. I want the record to be right. I’m not doing it without a plan; I’m not putting it out like that,” 50 told MTV News about his long-awaited fifth studio album. The multiplatinum rap king points to his label Interscope and says he won’t make a move until the record company is ready. “It’s a lot of staff changes, a lot of different people moving in and moving out, so you got to kind of wait until everything’s right; until it’s settled in,” he reasoned. Fif even came up with a sports analogy to describe his current situation.
50 likens himself to a basketball player with dominant skills but less team support — someone akin to Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant maybe? “I’ve been on a team where I take the ball out and throw myself the alley-oop, and I take the ball out and shoot the three-pointer myself, and I take the ball out and I dunk the ball,” he said, driving home the analogy. 50 recently spoke to SOHH about his past issues with the label music executive Jimmy Iovine built.
“With Interscope, look, all artists are going to express their frustrations with the system at some point,” Fif told SOHH. “I’ve had all the success in my career with Interscope Records. You know? So when everybody is there and working, that’s a powerful system there but a lot of people that are walking around the building now are new faces so I’m reintroducing myself and creating a new focus with the people that are actually there.” (SOHH)
He previously cited problems meeting eye-to-eye with Interscope for adding to their now-nixed conflict.
“I wrote this album. I went through the process of writing it. It’s been discouraging at points to not see the same efforts from everyone,” 50 said when asked about his label frustrations and perceived depression. “As far as me partnering with Feeding America for this actual project, the business model that I adapted was — conscious capitalism.
