[Tune in to the fifth episode of H.O.Gcast brought to you by House of Guvera at http://houseofguvera.com/2015/09/h-o-g-cast-ep-5-zed-cutsinger/ , as host Kellen Strauther aka DJ Keltronix interviews comedian, actor and writer Zed Cutsinger. Kellen first met Zed a couple years ago in Brooklyn while on tour with Trash Talk. Since then, Zed’s taken Kellen to perform his first open mic, Zed’s moved to LA and joined UCB. Check out the HOGcast to hear them talk about music and comedy.]

On musicians releasing music from jail

“If you haven’t already built your career, then no one cares anymore. If somebody big went to jail, alright we’ll figure it out. Like Gucci Mane is killing it from jail. For some reason, I don’t know how he’s doing it. He keeps putting out records. I think he put out like 14 mix tapes from jail – something crazy like that.”

On the difference between music and comedy:

“The difference between music and comedy is so many musicians get so big when they’re in their early 20s. For a lot of comedians it doesn’t happen until they’re in their 30s and what’s so weird about that is you don’t really have enough life experience to say much when you’re in your 20s. That’s why so many comedians really find their form and they’re their best in their 30s. When you have someone like The Weeknd and he’s writing these love songs, I want to know his love songs when he’s like 32. That’s going to be much heavier.”

On rap music and its braggadocios style

“Jay Z, I mean his style now…it is very very braggadocios but that’s so honest. That is his lifestyle…he is the pioneer of being really really rich and talking about the specifics of the rich lifestyle. There might have been other people who faked it, but he is that rich.”

On the start of his comedy career:

“I’ve always been doing comedy in my own way but starting in like 2006-2007 when I was living in New York, I started making it more of like a hobby. So I did some sketch back then. And then around 2011-2012, when I moved to LA that’s when I wanted to make a living off of it. So during all that time sketch was being done a lot. For 3 years I tried out for the Harold Teams in New York for UCB and I never got on a team. It’s so competitive. I think something like 400-500 people try out every year and then they get like 16 – it’s very crazy. It never worked out. I moved to LA, I took a couple sketch classes and there was an audition for writers and actors and I submitted my sketch packet thinking might as well try this. Since then, we’re about to have our eighth show at UCB…”

On who his favorite comedian is:

“The funniest people to me are the people who are unintentional. That cracks me up the most. So like there’s no one who’s made me laugh more than my dad. He’s such a character and he’ll say things, and it’s so brilliant, but it’s never punctuated.”
