[A week before his long-awaited High Times sophomore LP hits store shelves, Hustle Gang's Young Dro gives SOHH readers some perspective into why he wasn't "gone" but making moves quietly these past few years.]
I’m going to be honest with you, you’re right about [me stepping away]. I’ll take the blame for half of that. I could have worked harder to do what I had to do to stay mainstream but you know life has a way of doing things.
But at the same time, I just screenshot something that somebody put together on Twitter that had about 15 mix CDs throughout my time being “gone” but I was really making money up under the top mainstream.
You’ve got the top mainstream and then you’ve got the underground kings. Big shout-outs to UGK, Bun B and Pimp C. You’ve got the underground cats like me. I didn’t have a problem still being in the hood and making music.
Being gone? I wouldn’t say so much it was that because one of my mix CDs, I Co-Sign Myself, with DJ Dro, that took me to Germany. I was already touring in Germany and out in that motherf*cker off that so I couldn’t tell you that I’ve been gone.
Everybody was not tapping into what I was doing at a certain point but I’m back now and my album drops October 15 and it’s called High Times. I’m going to reassure you that I can be up there with the guys on the mainstream.
