Scoot over Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Kim, Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa has crowned Taylor Gang protégé Lola Monroe the hottest female rhyme spitter in today’s rap game.
In Wiz’s perspective, Monroe’s Washington, D.C. background and story sets her apart from the competition.
“Lola Monroe, she’s the First Lady of Taylor Gang, the only chick that raps in Taylor Gang,” he explained. “She’s iller than any female artist I’ve ever heard in my life. Yeah. She’s so much better than any female because, just her lyrical ability. I know a lot of people say that shit, but she’s from D.C., but nobody’s heard that story before, nobody’s heard that story before from a female. You know what I mean? You’ve heard all these other stories and all this other shit, but you haven’t heard her yet, so I feel she’s different, she’s better.” (Mr. Grassys)
Last November, Khalifa’s fiancé Amber Rose gave Monroe big props for her musical talent.
“I am the queen. She is the first lady. Lola is the sh*t. You guys really got to get into her. She’s super talented, she’s my sister, she’s super duper dope and she is the first lady of Taylor Gang…period. She’s going to come in, she’s killin’ the game and she’s working really hard. Me and Lola both have very, very similar lives. We were both strippers at 15-years-old. We both been through a really hard struggle. We’ve both been scrutinized for a lot of different things.” (XXL Mag)
A month prior, Monroe broke the news of her Taylor Gang signing.
She explained why she decided to sign with the “Black and Yellow” rapper. “Wiz is like a positive free individual that’s about his business and that matches everything I’ve created on my side,” she said. “When he reached out, he was like, ‘I feel as though our movements represent the same thing, so I want you to rep Taylor Gang.’ And I agreed, so it’s only right. Plus, out of all the situations that came to me, my business instincts and just the comfort level, I felt it was just the right move with him. He’s a stand-up dude and it just felt right.” LoLa, who was nominated for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at this year’s BET Awards, is prepping her debut album and will drop a new single in November. “It’s gon’ be crazy.” (Rap-Up)
In early 2010, Monroe said she retired from exotic photo shoots to pursue a music career.
“I’m not doing that anymore,” she revealed in an interview. “I’m not doing videos, unless it’s a cameo. No magazine shoots, unless it’s promoting my music. It helps, kind of, but it also became an obstacle. It helped me brand my name and get my name out there, but at the same time, with the visuals, the sexy pictures, me being known as a model made it hard for people to really take me in as an artist. It’s like a gift and a curse.” (The Washington Post)
