Australian rapper Iggy Azalea speaks on a range of topics in a new Paper magazine cover feature, notably the world's fascination with twerking and how awkward her dating life is these days.
While twerking continues to become a staple in American hip-hop culture, Iggy admits she has been up on the booty-shaking movement well before the masses.
Azalea stands at the forefront of social-media savvy hip-hop stars. She’s massively popular online — if you add up her followers on Twitter, Vine and Instagram, it’s more people than the population of Dallas, Texas. All of this Internet exposure has created a wave of Azalea admirers and imitators, including twerk-obsessed Miley Cyrus. “I’ve been doing that onstage for two-and-a-half years,” Azalea says of Cyrus’ recent forays into the a**-grinding dance craze. “She probably f*cking watched my videos online and decided to try it.” (Paper Mag)
Azalea also speaks on a hurdle she runs into when it comes to dating.
When talking to Azalea, no topic is off-limits. She doesn’t shy away from discussing her private life, but she’s guarded about mentioning names. “My date?” she says when pressed for details. “He’s a crush I’ve had since 2010. But he always called me ‘sis’! What’s up with that? Why don’t you think I’m pretty? I always thought he was cute.” Despite being a model repped by Wilhelmina, Azalea insists that men don’t show interest in her. “Guys don’t approach me,” she says. “I have to approach them. It’s so annoying. I think I must have a bitchy face, because guys don’t want to talk to me. It’s true, I have a mean face.” (Paper Mag)
Last month, Iggy came clean on her past fling with New York rapper A$AP Rocky.
“I’ve never regretted it. I f*cking loved him. I know he loved me, too,” she said when asked about her finger tat. “I felt like he was somebody I could count on who loved me for being me, and I don’t want to forget that. I would sacrifice a quarter of a pinky for those memories. That’s why I didn’t cross it out all the way, because if I’d covered it up all the way, that says I’m embarrassed. You shouldn’t be ashamed of the trials of becoming an adult. I wanted people to know I’m free for more possible love interests, but also not ashamed.” (Complex)
The Australian rapper hinted at why things fizzled out with A$AP last June.
“You know who the first was,” Iggy added, referring to A$AP being the first famous rapper she has dated. “Let’s be real, you’re not that stupid — we fell out because I’m young and he’s young and it’s a really difficult time. For me, I was going through a lot of stuff and his career was going great and mine was going a different way and we stopped hanging out. But we’re still cool, we’re still friends. … I have no ill feelings to A$AP. He’s cool and I’m really proud of him and his album going number one.” (“The Breakfast Club”)
