“When You Got Cash Money Bringing In $100 Million, You Have To Look At That Success”

While Kanye West is leaving fans waiting until the spring before putting out a G.O.O.D. Music compilation album, SOHH decided to hit up his longtime producer Ken Lewis to get his take on the upcoming LP.

Despite having worked with Yeezy from the start of his career up to last summer’s Watch the Throne joint Jay-Z effort, Lewis is still waiting to earn a production credit on the project.

“I haven’t been called in to work on the project yet but I’m hoping I get that phone call,” Lewis laughingly told SOHH. “That’s certainly a record that I want to be on. I think it’s smart. I don’t think it’s necessarily following what anyone else is doing but that’s kind of the trend. That’s what the Maybach Music Group did, that’s what Young Money/Cash Money put out [in 2009]. To me, it feels to me like artists are taking more control of their careers than maybe a lot of them had in the past. I think the success is born from them taking that control [which has inspired] other artists to do the same. When you got Cash Money bringing in $100 million, you have to look at that success and be like, ‘Wow, that’s incredible. What can I do to do the same thing?’ I’ve always felt like Kanye has done right by his artists, so why not put out a compilation album and let everybody shine?” (SOHH)

Although Lewis has worked with a few G.O.O.D. Music artists already, he hopes to get one-on-one time with everyone if called upon for the compilation project.

“I’ve already worked with Kid Cudi, so Kanye’s checked off the list, Cudi’s checked off the list,” Lewis added when asked who he would want to work with in G.O.O.D. Music. “Big Sean, I’d love to work with him. The good thing is hopefully I’ll be able to work with all of them. I’m an equal opportunity guy, I want to work with everybody.” (SOHH)

Earlier this month, Big Sean hinted at what fans could anticipate from the LP.

“Kanye was like, ‘Yo, we got the illest people in the world on one label.’ I’ve been telling him, ‘We need to do a group thing, a group album.’ Since my album came out, since he just did Watch the Throne, he was like, ‘The next thing we should do is the G.O.O.D.Music album,'” Sean explained in an interview. So, we’re going to have singles. It’s going to be a real a** album. [It’ll have] me, Kanye, Common, Pusha T, John Legend, everybody — [Kid] Cudi, everybody, man. It’s going to be nuts — it’s almost done. I ain’t done with my part though.” (Power 92)

Recently, G.O.O.D. Music’s Common said he was ready to drop some bars for Ye.

“We had talked about it before, but it was actually some new news to me that it was going forward,” Common said referring to the compilation album. “But I’m definitely looking forward to it and I obviously want to be a part of it. I’m G.O.O.D. Music family forever. Even though my album is not coming out on G.O.O.D. Music, I’m still a G.O.O.D. Music affiliate and artist. That’s my family forever.” (VIBE)

The G.O.O.D. Music compilation album is slated to drop in spring 2012.
