Rap star Kendrick Lamar is not going to be the biggest attraction at the Grammy Awards next week as reports claim music icons Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Madonna are expected to also grace the stage.

Despite the anticipation, the female divas are expected to be surprises performers at the annual star-studded celebration.

The pop superstars are expected to be among the big surprise moments during next week’s ceremony, according to two sources with knowledge of the plans. Late last year Beyonce pulled off one of the best-kept secrets in recent music history when she stealthily released her self-titled album without as much as a hint. The Grammys is where she will make her first televised performance in support of the project — which shattered iTunes records upon its release in December — according to a source with knowledge of the matter. Recently, music mogul Diddy said Beyoncé had created classic material with her recently released self-titled album.

“Create a body of work that stands for something and that you want to see stand for yourself 10 years from now. And I think that she didn’t go after making radio records. Like we got, I think, one of the best albums from Beyoncé. And also just from an innovation level she’s a different type of artist. She’s up there with the great ones. And everybody should aspire to be up there. Her name will be said with Diana Ross. It will be said with The Rolling Stones.” (REVOLT TV)

Asked for his reaction to landing handfuls of Grammy nominations over last month, Kendrick Lamar used the opportunity to thank various outlets.

“It feels great. I got some of the best fans, some of the best family, the best radio stations supporting me, and that’s who I owe it to at the end of the day. I need that love [to win]. That album is a really raw album, it’s not too much crossover. So for them to even put it in that light, that’s a win by itself. So if I take it home that’s even more of a crazy feeling.” (Power 106 FM)

Although Beyoncé’s husband Jay Z leads all nominees, Lamar does not trail far behind with seven nods.

Jay Z easily led Grammy Award nominations announced Friday with nine, but left-of-center rappers Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Kendrick Lamar were among a group of new stars who took many of the major nominations. Macklemore and Lewis’ gay marriage anthem ”Same Love” was among song of the year nominees and the Seattle rap crew joined Los Angeles rapper Lamar with seven nominations apiece, including best album and best new artist of the year. Pharrell Williams had four major nominations among his seven and Justin Timberlake also had seven. (Boston)
