Maybach Music Group’s Wale recently talked about his growing popularity and why his growing bank account should hopefully land him a spot on Forbes’ Hip-Hop Cash Kings list within 24 months.

According to reports, Wale has banked in roughly $5 million in just over a year.

That competitive nature has set the rapper on a course to stardom, as his recent success shows. Wale grossed over $20,000 per night while performing more than 75 concerts over the past year; his new album, Ambition, provided the soundtrack. Over the past 12 months, he pulled in nearly $5 million, narrowly missing the Hip-Hop Cash Kings list. “I don’t want to be one of those guys that you see who made $4 million, invested $3.5 million, and now you work at Wendy’s,” he says. “I want to get the highest score on Pacman or Frogger … [and] I want to make sure I’m on the FORBES list in a year or two.” (Forbes)

Over the winter, rapper Wiz Khalifa shared a similar sentiment when he vowed to make $100 million this year.

“Oh yeah, man, I’m going to make $100 million this year,” he said. “No doubt, $100 million. The new mixtape [will] get everybody ready and get their wallets open.” Wiz was clearly in high spirits last night, and although he’s likely in for another big year, $100 million is a bit of a long shot. In the five years I’ve charted hip-hop’s top earners, only 50 Cent has taken home nine figures in a single year (in 2008, thanks to a $100 million windfall from the sale of his stake in VitaminWater parent Glaceau to Coca-Cola). Only 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Diddy and Kanye West have earned nine figures in the past five years combined. (Forbes)

This year’s Hip-Hop Cash Kings top 20 list ranges from $6 million to $110 million.

1. Dr. Dre – $110 million 2. Diddy – $45 million 3. Jay-Z – $38 million 4. Kanye West – $35 million 5. Lil Wayne – $27 million 6 Drake – $20.5 million 7. Birdman – $20 million 8. Nicki Minaj – $15.5 million 9. Eminem – $15 million 10. Ludacris – $12 million 11. Pitbull – $9.5 million 12. Rick Ross – $9 million (tie) 12. Wiz Khalifa – $9 million (tie) 14.
