Maybach Music Group's Wale has stepped up for R&B singer Miguel following pop star Kelly Clarkson publicly playing him during Sunday's Grammy Awards ceremony.
Wale spoke out on his issues with Clarkson and the Grammy Awards as a whole for not properly showing respect to the urban genre.
“I didn’t like the Kelly Clarkson back-handed comments to Miguel. I didn’t like that at all. I just feel like our urban music is belittled, a little bit. Not trying to offend nobody on the committee, but for a record as big as ‘Adorn,’ and it to not be presented as a real performance onstage; it was almost like a segue to an award. Again, I don’t want to offend anybody on the committee, but that wasn’t a very good representation of our music because ‘Adorn’ is gonna be around for the next 30 years.” (MTV)
Clarkson caught heat during an award acceptance speech after publicly admiting she was unfamiliar with Miguel’s body of work.
If you thought you heard new names and saw fresh faces at the Grammy Awards, you’re in famous company. Even Kelly Clarkson didn’t know who R&B singer Miguel was until his performance Sunday. As Clarkson took the Grammy for best pop vocal album for “Stronger,” the star gave a shoutout to the R&B singer who had performed earlier on the CBS broadcast, saying, “Miguel, I don’t know who the hell you are, but we need to sing together. I mean, good God. That was the sexiest damn thing I’ve ever seen.” (Upstart)
Despite the perceived dicey words, Clarkson and Miguel managed to meet backstage and take a photo together.
Shortly afterward her Grammy acceptance speech, Clarkson met Miguel for the first time backstage and posted their photo, along with the tweet “Miguel”. Clarkson’s acceptance speech caught the attention of fellow music artists, including Pink, who tweeted: “Congrats to Kelly Clarkson for the award and that love able speech. You made me laugh. Can’t wait to hear that song with Miguel. Xo” (CBS News)
Prior to Kelly’s comments, the singer and Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa hit the stage for a duet.
We’re not sure if Miguel was able to pull a producer’s ear and convince them to shave a few minutes from LL Cool J‘s awful closing performance or what, but somehow someway, he and Wiz Khalifa were able to squeeze in a glorious performance of “Adorn” before presenting the award for best Country Solo Performance. Guess McDonald’s isn’t the only one offering two-for-one specials, since the Grammys wants to cut corners and things. (Opposing Views)
