Maybach Music Group’s Wale has announced plans to release a new studio album this year called Shine.

During a State of the Union pre-show performance last night (January 12), the Washington, DC native broke the album news to attendees.

“Obviously this is not a rap concert. [laughs] But I told Miss Michelle [Obama] I’m gonna make it a rap concert,” Wale said mid-way through his performance. “My name is Wale. My fifth album, Shine, 2016. Shine on.” (The White House)

The rap veteran has teased his new album title across social media this week.

In summer 2015, Wale revealed his interest in making a music project based on the District of Columbia’s renowned go-go genre.

“I’m working on a go-go album and it’s kind of like my N*E*R*D project separate outside [of a] ‘Wale project,” he explained. “I got like…Tinashe and Chris Brown and a whole lot more [dope people] who is trying to help me work [on the project]. The 30-year-old platinum-selling artist also revealed his intentions of getting several prominent Go-Go musicians in the mix; joking how “some people” don’t even know they’re going to get a call from him to meet him in a Los Angeles studio in the forthcoming weeks. Last year, MMG head Rick Ross dished on Wale’s recently released The Album About Nothing LP.

“As an artist you find at different times you want to do different things. And Wale, he consistently make his shit fly. This intelligent, fly good music right here that real Gs fuck with. And it’s just intelligent with the wordplay. It’s just some dope sh*t. Wale finna do it bigger than ever.” (XXL Mag)
