[Vinnie Paz, frontman of the long-running group Jedi Mind Tricks, recently sat down with hip-hop personality Shawn Setaro on his popular “The Cipher” podcast. Listen to the full interview and check out five gems Vinnie dropped during the Q&A.]

On what he’s learned in recent years about art and life:

“You can be uncompromising and not be an a**hole. I didn’t think you could before. I didn’t know that you could make uncompromising art and not be a d*ckhead.”

On the symptoms of Depersonalization Disorder, which he’s suffered from for decades:

“I spent years of my life thinking that I was dead and stuck in purgatory.”

On the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal:

“It’s a metaphor for the city of Philadelphia that he’s still fighting and won’t go out, won’t cop a plea.”

On being happy:

“Happy people make me mad. But I think I hate that I’m not that way. And I think that I hate stupid people because stupid people are happy, because they’re too stupid to know that they shouldn’t be.”

On JMT’s 1997 debut full-length, The Psycho-Social, Chemical, Biological and Electro-Magnetic Manipulation of Human Consciousness

“Isn’t that the f*cking dumbest thing you’ve ever heard?  I’m gonna come out, the first thing people are going to hear about me is going to be a batsh*t PCP-influenced conspiracy theory album. It may be the dumbest thing in the history of music.”
